All cars raced in turn each four lanes. The time was taken for each car by computer and its result was displayed on a wall screen immediately.  Scouts watched the race with excitement and cheered.

Yokohama Nanoh district of Kanagawa Council, Japan held the Pinewood Derby race at the Beaver and Cub Scout Rally of district on March 9, 2014.

This Pinewood Derby was started by Cubs of California, U.S.A., in 1957.  Hand made cars by scouts have competed the speed and design.

This is our first time challenge of Pinewood Derby, but hoping this event will bring an opportunity to hold a competition race with other districts and exchange of friendship, especially with the U.S. scouts in Japan (Boy Scouts of America –Asia East District).

Celebrating Founder’s Day

February 22nd, the World is celebrating the Founder’s Day.

Yokohama 87 group had this celebration. Life of Lord Baden Powell (B-P) was introduced from Scout patrol, followed by video of his voice and last message.

The challenge of day was to dress up the leaders as look like B-P using materials in hand such as old newspaper, carten board, calendar and posters, rope, etc. Three teams of scouts – Beavers, Cubs and Scouts – created dress up stuff by checking those photos and pictures of B-P by collaborating together.

MOCHITSUKI is a very traditional activity we have as a new year event.
Scouts are pounding steamed rice with a mallet.

There are also a fun game such as FUKUWARAI.

FUKUWARAI is one of the Japanese traditional games people play on New Year day.  It is a puzzle of a human face, and a player has to do the puzzle wearing a blindfold.  Since players cannot see which part of the face is on the piece of the puzzle, the face made up by the player is usually quite unique like having a nose above eyes.  People enjoy playing this game.
